This is one of the more curious stories in the book, perhaps not quite understandable to modern minds. Babette is a 60 year old,
confined in an asylum where she is known by everyone, including the superintendent. Her eyes are childlike and catch everyone’s attention but she is not beautiful. Her favorite at the asylum is La Frieze, who one day kills the superintendent for having "designs" on Babette.
